The exhibit, “AACHM@1528: Where Art Meets History”

It is such an honor for me to have two of my mosaics displayed in the African American Cultural and Historical Museum of Washtenaw County. To me the museum is a treasure for the community. It is a physical space to preserve, archive, and celebrate African American history.
I will be showing my latest Aretha Franklin mosaic and my latest John Coltrane mosaic. I made the Coltrane mosaic honoring the memory of the late Robert Brown my friend that passed away in 2020. Being selected to display my art is a thrill that will last a life time. I would like to thank all the great teachers and fellow students that helped me along the way. Specifically, Yulia Hanansen, and Carol Shelkin, Mosaic Artists of Michigan and the Ann Arbor Mosaic group.
When I started making mosaics, I was a complete novice. I was taught well. When I got to the point that I could complete a portrait mosaic, I began thinking about the possibility of making mosaics of Jazz and R&B artists that I loved and admired. I could sense that if I got good enough my mosaics would resonate with music lovers. 
My first attempts at making Jazz and R&B mosaics were just that, attempts, but, I got better with practice. I have completed over 50 portrait mosaics.
I taught in the Ann Arbor Schools for 35 years, I used to tell my students that if they worked hard good things would happen. They have for me and I’m grateful.
