Louis Armstrong was nicknamed Satchmo, he was an all-star virtuoso. He came to prominence in the 1920’s, influencing countless musicians with his daring trumpet and unique vocals. He had a charismatic stage presence that impressed the Jazz and Pop world. La Vian Rose and What a Wonderful World, were his signature songs.

This is my second mosaic of the great trumpeter. The colors I chose for this mosaic were based on the theme Blue in Green one of Miles’ classic tunes. This is the first jazz portrait that I did not use grout at all.

John Coltrane was know as Trane. He worked in the Be-bop and hard-bop Idioms. He played with Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk. Coltrane signature songs were Naima, Giant Steps, My Favorite Things, and Love Supreme. He is recognized as an all time great.

Wynton Marsalis is one of my favorite trumpeters. He has always been an outspoken supporter of jazz. I have seen him and his groups in numerous concerts. He keeps straight ahead jazz alive and well. I wanted to show his flare and musicianship in this mosaic.

Billy Holiday was a another 1940’s era diva that created her own style. This mosaic was meant to be an interpretation of a young Billy Holiday.

Terence Blanchard is another one of my favorite trumpeters. He too has been a leader and innovator in the world of jazz that I love. He has written many movie scores especially for Spike Lee. Terence Blanchard performs in Detroit on a regular basis.
